Chapter Twenty

Lily had gotten a little nervous waiting for Mathias to call so she’d started early. By the time the phone had actually rung and Mathias had given her the green light, the beheaded corpse was already ablaze. She was unsure how long it would actually take the two brothers to make it to her, but Mathias seemed sure they would want to see the body themselves. More than even the body, they would be relying on her reaction to believe Valentine was really dead, so she started with the acting right away.

The smell of burning flesh assaulted her nose and throat, only helping with her coughs and inconsolable sobs. She tried to remember how she had felt when her parents had passed, what she had gone through then, and pull her emotion from something real. It had to be real, and suddenly it occurred to Lily that she’d experienced this grief many, many times and knew the feeling well. Both her parents and her beloved grandmother were dead. Her former life was gone forever. This was her life now: death and decapitations. A husband who attacked people and a son who would either die before her while she lived forever or choose to become what she had, an immortal killer. She squeezed her eyes shut and pulled at her hair until it hurt, then screamed incoherently until she lost her breath. Then she screamed some more.

When Lily finally opened her eyes, she realized Edgar and Edmund stood before her and had been watching her for some time. The body blazed and was burned beyond recognition, all of the hair gone and the skin black. Mathias had told her not to over-think what she would say or do because it would seem rehearsed. Now that the time had come, she had no idea what to say, so she opted for nothing at all.

Lily stood, steadying herself with her sword, and began to step away. When she walked by Edward, he gently touched her arm, stopping her in her tracks. Edward had been the most emotional over the death of his brother. He didn’t speak, but instead gave her a nod, which Lily understood to mean he acknowledged her grief, or maybe the fact that she had done well by killing her husband. Either way, Lily raised her head and began to move away.

“Would you like your husband’s body to be sent to Ohio?” Edgar asked before she turned the corner of the alley.

“That’s not my husband.” Lily answered carefully.

“So this is not Valentine Ballard?” Edgar questioned.

“That’s Valentine, but he was no longer my husband the moment he became a monster.”

Lily turned the corner and forced herself to keep a steady pace and not run back to the house on Chartres. So far she had pulled it off, and hopefully that last bit had convinced them that not only was that corpse Valentine, but that she was capable of killing him.

Lily took a deep breath and refrained from pumping her fist in the air.
